WORK History

Vice President Mitek Labs, 03/2016 to Current
Mitek Systems Inc– San Diego, CA
  • Lead the Mitek Labs group which conducts research in computer vision and machine learning technologies to support the innovation and development of all Mitek products. The team also develops the production ready image processing pipelines called CoreFlow for various products and customer solutions and delivers them to Engineering for integration and deployment.
  • Responsible for the algorithm (and a primary inventor) of the next generation ID verification CoreFlow pipeline (MobileVerify) with novel techniques for document detection, classification, extraction and authentication, and face verification for matching selfies to document photos.
  • Started the group with 5 scientists/engineers and this has grown to about 40 globally, responsible for hiring, integrating the acqui-hire resources, and day to day management of the group.
  • Conducted technology due diligence and integration (of people and technology) of various European acquisitions: IDChecker (Amsterdam), ICAR (Barcelona) and A2iA (Paris).
President/Chief Executive Officer, 01/2007 to 02/2016
Merakona Inc– San Diego, CA
  • Developed the product APATS (Anti-Piggybacking and Tailgating System) for detecting unauthorized use of access controls systems. This was based on using structured light and 3D technology for people sensing inside a revolving door and is being licensed by two large door manufacturers.
  • Developed identity verification technologies for Mitek Systems, enhancing driver license OCR read rate accuracy with implementation of state-of-the-art and customized, filtering, binzarization and post-processing algorithms for all 50 US states.
  • Developed 2D and 3D (stereo and laser triangulation) technologies for People Sensing, Cart Detection, Vehicle detection, Pill classification for variousOEM customers for the applications: Loss prevention in grocery stores; Thrown object detection at Airport Exits; Drug identification product for pharmacies;
President/Chief Executive Officer, 03/2012 to 12/2015
Pelfunc Inc.– San Diego, CA
  • Pelfunc, Inc is the developer of “Squeak: Every Picture has a Story” technology and the Squeak16 App. Squeak16 is an iPhone App, social network and a new mobile photo sharing paradigm. A Squeak allows you to add voice, sketch, zoom and text to your pictures, to create a 16-second animation clip that plays like a movie. Users can also reply using Squeaks as opposed to just “Likes” and “Comments”, promoting rich conversations around pictures and taking user engagement to the next level.
Various Roles, 12/1994 to 01/2007
Cognex Corp– Natick, MA

Director, Advanced Products Group
  • Led the development for theCognex Doorman project. Cognex Doorman is a standalone vision sensor used for operation of automatic sliding and swinging doors. These sensors detect the position, size and trajectories of all stationary and moving object in a scene and use this information to either activate the doors to allow passage of people, or stall for safety reasons.
  • Led the development for theCognex People Sensor project. The CPS-1000 is a standalone vision sensor designed to enhance portal (revolving, swinging, sliding doors) security; it will detect and count people as they pass through an access-controlled doorway. Led a group of 8.
  • Invented 3D vision technology to detect and track people in an unstructured environment. Also evaluated feasibility of the technology for numerous other applications such as door activation, people counting, airport exit lane monitoring, traffic light intersection people sensing, elevator sensing, shopper tracking
Consulting Software Engineer, R & D Group
  • Led theVARN (Vision Assisted Road Navigation) Project, developed algorithms for vehicle tracking, lane following, adaptive cruise control & obstacle avoidance for autonomous vehicle navigation.
  • Led developer forPatmax , a state-of the art, Rotation and Scale invariant tool for Pattern Alignment in the industry. Was involved during the entire Product development cycle, design, development, optimization, review, testing, debugging. The tool was written in C++ and Assembly (Pentium + MMX, C80 DSP).
  • Developed an OptimizedParabolic Low Pass Filter for the Pentium, MMX platform.
Principal Software Engineer, Vision Tools Group
  • Developed MMX/TI Optimized routines for Sobel Edge Detection, True Peak Detection,Edge Interpolation, Image Arithmetic Operations, LUT Operations and Hough Transform.
  • Developed algorithms for post die-bond monitoring, i.e. die surface check, lead area check and adhesive wet-out. Also developed a highly robust algorithm for solder pasteinspection.
  • Developed a robust algorithm for detecting the check box markings outside a photo envelope and also the contents inside of an envelope using a Machine Vision system.
Senior Software Engineer, 03/1990 to 12/1994
Inex Vision Systems, Inc– Clearwater, FL
  • Designed embedded, real-time, high-speed, fully automated machine vision systems for on-line inspection in the container and the packaging industry. These systems were based with special purpose image processors and hardware pipelines. Developedsoftware for image processing, image acquisition, part tracking, system control, communications and graphical user interfaces.
  • Designed a Hopfield neural network to solve the Correspondence problem.
Research Assistant, 01/1989 to 02/1990
Center For Microelectronics Research– Tampa, FL
  • Proposed two new algorithms and a VLSI architecture to detect corners in images. The algorithms are based on the derivatives of Gaussian and the half-edge concept.
  • Designed quarter million transistors, 18-processor systolic array for computations in Vision. A CMOS VLSI chip implementing the processor was fabricated and tested.
Scientist, 06/1987 to 07/1988
Indian Space Research Organization, Satellite Center– Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
  • Developed the Graphics package, "3-Dimensional Antenna Radiation Pattern in Cylindrical Coordinates". Tool used for design and testing of antenna arrays for satellite applications.
